WANDERLUST WINTER ESCAPES

WANDERLUST WINTER ESCAPES
Europe has some of the most beautiful and breathtaking winter spots, making it hard to choose between all of them. Here are a few options we recommend, ranging from exceptional fairy-tale like landscapes to cool hidden towns for winter sports lovers.
  • Hallstatt, Austria

Right by the water and surrounded by the Dachstein Mountains, this Austrian town filled with 12th century fairy-tale churches allows tourists to experience wonderful landscapes throughout the year. For hiking lovers, the Hallstatt skywalk above the city offers breathtaking views of the lake and mountains. Several ski resorts surround the area.

  • Zermatt, Switzerland

With more than 200 kilometres of tracks for ski lovers, Zermatt offers its visitors all kinds of winter leisure. Tourists can enjoy hiking while exploring the local fauna, as well as snowshoeing. The town offers several cozy cafés and restaurants for typical Swiss fondue and raclette.

  •  Rovaniemi, Finland

Considered the official home of Santa Claus, only 4 kilometres south of the Arctic circle, this fairy-tale village is overflowing with plenty of icy experiences. From snow restaurants and ice hotels, to hiking in the nearby forests passing the Ounaskoski beach for winter swimming, Rovaniemi offers a one-of-a-kind wintery experience for the bravest.

  • Bergen, Norway

Famous for its colourful wooden buildings, Bergen offers breathtaking views of the fjords covered in snow with cruises available all year round. With a chance to catch the northern lights, the town offers as well plenty of cafés near the water and the harbour where visitors can enjoy local kanelboller (Norwegian cinnamon roll) and hot chocolate. The funicular is a rustic cable car which allows tourists to access the top of Mount Fløyen for a spectacular view on Bergen mountains, with skiing, snowboarding and sledding opportunities.

  • Strasbourg, France

Known for its traditional Christmas markets lodged inside the enchanting medieval town, Strasbourg is famous for its half-timbered houses and canals, as well as its Franco-Germanic influence present through every aspect, from cuisine with tarte flambées, to architecture with the central Cathedral and Christmas decorated historical buildings.

  • Abisko, Sweden

Considered one of the most spectacular places to see the northern lights, Abisko is perfect for cross-country skiing, sledding, snowmobiling and hiking. The town is also home to the first ice hotel with temperatures reaching -5 degrees for the bravest visitors.

  • Bormio, Italy

Known for its spectacular sights and breathtaking ski trails, Bormio appeals to skiers and non-skiers alike. Food lovers will be satisfied with plenty of cozy cafés and restaurants. Spa enthusiast can enjoy the numerous wellness centers and local terme.
