The Art of Hosting Well

The Art of Hosting Well

As the days start to cool in Europe and autumn settles in, there’s a different kind of excitement about entertaining. While in Australia the warmer weather makes me think of long garden lunches and summer barbecues, here I find myself drawn to slower, more intimate gatherings. Cosy dinners with friends, candlelit tables, and Sunday afternoons spent sharing comfort food feel just as joyful.

Of course, hosting can still feel overwhelming. I know that moment well — you’ve been planning for weeks, and suddenly it’s the afternoon of, your kitchen bench is piled high with ingredients and the clock is ticking. Over the years, though, I’ve learned that a few simple rituals can turn the chaos into something quite fun. For me, it’s about creating a home that feels welcoming, warm, and easy to enjoy. Here are some of my favourite ways to make hosting feel that much more effortless.

1. Preparation is everything

It's the age old saying, but it's true. The secret to stress-free entertaining (or anything) is being prepared. If you can, do as much as possible ahead of time so you’re not stuck in the kitchen once guests arrive. Simple dishes that can be cooked in one tray or pot are a lifesaver - they allow you to be present, not just plating up. I also love a simple mix of salads that you can prepare in the morning and then throw together as guests arrive.

Cleaning wise - I like to get the house in order the day before. The morning of I'll do a simple refresh — a wipe-down of surfaces with the Bench Spray, refill the Hand Wash in the bathroom and a quick mist of fragrance through the living spaces. These little steps make the home feel cared for without taking hours of cleaning.

2. Dress Comfortably (and Practically)

It sounds obvious, but wearing something you feel good in makes a difference. Choose breathable fabrics, and perhaps avoid anything too delicate — a splash of sauce or glass of red is always a possibility. When you’re comfortable, you’ll feel more relaxed, and your guests will too.

3. Set the Mood with Scent and Light

The atmosphere is just as important as the food. This is where lighting makes all the difference - natural light and open windows during the day; warm lamps or dimmed lights in the evening.

And of course, I always think about scent. A few drops of Lemon Tea Tree & Mandarin oil in a diffuser will instantly lift a daytime gathering, while something deeper and more grounding like Fragonia & Sandalwood sets the mood beautifully at night. It's a small touch but something I always get compliments on.

4. Get Creative with the Tablescape

I find a beautifully set table such a joy - both to create and to sit at. Putting in the effort to design a dining space that feels warm and personal doesn’t go unnoticed, and I truly believe it makes conversation flow more easily. I like arrangements that are simple and natural, as if you’ve just wandered into the garden and gathered them yourself. A bouquet, linen napkins and soft candlelight are often all you need.

5. Surprise & Delight

The most memorable hosting moments often come from the little touches your guests don’t expect. A handwritten menu, a playlist of songs from memories together — or a beautifully kept bathroom. I also love to have a fresh Hand Wash, clean towels and Essential Oil drops in the bathroom - little details that make guests feel cared for and comfortable throughout the night.

6. Welcome with a Signature Drink

There’s something wonderful about being handed a drink as soon as you arrive. I love creating a new cocktail for guests to try - usually with an Australian native. A fan favourite is a gin and tonic with a splash of finger lime or Davidson plum syrup. It doesn’t need to be complicated — just fun, light and reflective of the flavours you're loving.

For non-drinkers, sparkling water with a citrus, drizzle of native fruit syrup or a sprig of lemon myrtle is equally beautiful.

7. Let Your Guests Contribute

Don’t be afraid to share the load. Friends often love to bring something - a salad, a dessert or new favourite wine. Let them! It makes the table feel more abundant, and the night more communal. Hosting should never feel like a solo performance.

8. Forget Perfection

Most importantly, I try to let go of the idea of perfection. What your guests will remember is how they felt in your home - relaxed, welcomed and cared for. A slightly charred entrée or a mismatched plate won’t matter. In fact, imperfections often make the night more memorable. And if you're relaxed, you're guests will be.
