CARING FOR LINGERIE

CARING FOR LINGERIE

As most women can attest, a beautiful piece of lingerie can enhance both an outfit and the spirits.  With so many styles, fabrics and fittings available, each requires a different level of care to ensure longevity and keep them looking their best.  Our CEO and founder, Belinda Everingham was recently interviewed by The Irish Times where she shared her expert tips on how to care for delicates.

“Natural fibres such as cotton, silk and linen will last well if cared for properly.  These fibres are less likely to yellow with age and will release stains more easily than synthetic alternatives.  Delicate fabrics contain sensitive fibres that can be easily damaged so it’s important to avoid detergents with synthetic enzymes or optical brighteners.  Liquid detergents that are pH neutral, specifically designed for delicate fabrics are always a safer choice.

Handwashing is best to preserve a bra’s shape and fit.  Start by filling a sink or bucket with warm water, adding detergent while the tap is running. Place delicate items into the water, swirling them around for a few minutes then leave them to soak for 10 minutes before rinsing with cold water.  Gently squeeze out excess water taking care not to stretch out the shape.  Lay each item on a towel and allow to dry naturally in the shade.

For more robust cotton-style bras or underwear that can go into the wash, fasten any clasps and place items in a mesh laundry bag which will prevent hooks catching on other garments.  Choose the delicate cycle and use a gentle detergent following the supplier instructions.  Air-drying is best as hot air in the dryer and the rotating tumble will distort shape and degrade elastic causing pieces to age more quickly.

Before storing them away, ensure the clasps are secured which will help to avoid ripping fragile laces or embellishments. Don’t be tempted to fold moulded bras in half, rather lay them flat with space in-between.  This will help keep their shape and make them easier to find when needed.”
