The Australian bush is home to some of the most unique and powerful botanicals on Earth. While you may recognise their names from our labels, what lies behind each plant is often more fascinating than you’d imagine. Here are some lesser-known stories about the native ingredients that inspire Bondi Wash.
Flame Tree (Brachychiton acerifolius)
Don’t be fooled by its name – the Flame Tree doesn’t burn. It earns its title from its stunning, flame-red blossoms that appear before the leaves, creating the illusion of a burning crown. In Aboriginal culture, its seeds were roasted and eaten, while its bark was used for fibre. A native species where function meets spectacle – its seeds sustained, its bark clothed, and its blossom still turns heads.

Fragonia – the mystery of the name
This little-known essential oil is native only to the south of Western Australia and was formally named only in the early 2000s. Its botanical name (Agonis fragrans) explains the poetic-sounding “Fragonia.” But what makes it truly special is its natural balance of major components – a rare symmetry in essential oils, which is why it’s considered emotionally harmonising in aromatherapy.

Rosella (Hibiscus sabdariffa)
This vibrant flower isn't just a pretty face – its calyxes are rich in vitamin C and antioxidants and are used in teas, syrups, and even skincare. In summer, it’s a staple in tropical iced drinks across northern Australia, and its tart-sweet profile makes it both refreshing and invigorating.

Emu Apple (Owenia acidula)
Despite the name, it has nothing to do with emus (other than them loving to eat it!). This wrinkled, purplish fruit grows in arid inland areas and is one of the richest known sources of antioxidants. Indigenous Australians have used it for generations to heal skin and promote regeneration – today, it’s a rising star in clean beauty. It features in our Baby Lotion, where its gentle yet powerful properties nourish delicate skin.
Lilly Pilly (Syzygium smithii)
With its shiny pink berries and glossy green leaves, Lilly Pilly has become an icon of modern Australian gardens – but it’s also an ancient bush food. The berries contain fruit acids and vitamin E, giving them gentle exfoliating and firming properties. They were traditionally eaten for hydration and gut health. We’ve harnessed this native botanical in our Lilly Pilly Hand Cream, blending care and performance.
Lemon Myrtle – Australia’s “Queen of Lemon Herbs”
This leaf contains up to 98% citral – the compound responsible for that sharp, uplifting citrus scent – making it one of the most aromatic plants in the world. Beyond its antibacterial powers, it’s used in desserts, teas, soaps, and perfumes. We use it in our Stay Away range, where its natural insect-repellent qualities meet aromatic freshness.
