WHY WE DON'T USE SOFT PLASTIC POUCHES
At BONDI WASH, we have chosen not to use plastic pouches as we believe most of them are ending up in landfill. A recent survey of our customers revealed only 31% were using the REDcycle program, Australia’s soft plastic recycling program, to dispose of their soft plastics. Even if pouches are returned and cleaned to be refilled, the cost of transport, cleaning and resending is in itself an environmental cost. We also understand pouches cannot be refilled indefinitely. And now recent investigations have revealed that REDcycle has collapsed after the discovery that millions of soft plastic items including pouches are being stockpiled in warehouses and not recycled.
We know plastic consumption is a major environmental issue globally and please be assured that we continue to assess and develop ways to deliver our natural products at minimum cost to the environment.
We experimented with glass and while it does suit some applications, we found the risk of breakage too high and potentially dangerous, especially in high traffic areas like the kitchen, laundry and bathroom. As such, we use fully recyclable materials including aluminium and PET plastic, reserving glass for smaller items that are easier to manage.
BONDI WASH plastic packaging is made of polyethylene terephthalate, also known as PET. Like glass, it is very strong – able to safely contain our products – but it requires fewer resources to manufacture and to distribute and is fully recyclable – look for the chasing arrows symbol and the number one imprinted on the bottom to be sure. These can go straight into council recycling bins to be repurposed and reused, keeping them clear of landfill.
As we continually strive to look at ways to better care for our environment and improve our footprint, we are excited to expand on our use of recycled plastic packaging. These containers will be made from recycled PET, a new advance which is an important step in the circular economy.
