SEASONAL FOOD GUIDE

SEASONAL FOOD GUIDE

As the weather changes across the globe so does the fresh produce that is available. Health experts and chefs both often say you should eat "seasonally," or include foods in your diet that are grown at the same time of the year you eat them. Eating seasonally is not only better for your health, it also promotes balance with both the earth’s resources and its life forms carrying benefits to your health and the planet. Here are some of them.

1.Tastes Better : when fruits and vegetables are picked for consumption that have been naturally ripened on the vine or the tree and harvested at the right time, it will have much more flavour and nutrition.

2.Cheaper: when farmers are harvesting a large abundance of produce due to the crop being in season, the cost of the produce will go down.

3.Fresher with a Higher Nutritional Value: produce that is purchased in season is more likely to be fresher consumed closer to harvesting and higher in nutritional value. Some anti-oxidants such as Vitamin C, folate and carotenes will rapidly decline when stored for periods of time.

What fruits and vegetables are in season in June?

June welcomes summer and brings a fruit-heavy harvest of blueberries, cantaloupe, cherries, corn, kiwi, lettuce, mangoes, peaches, strawberries, Swiss chard, watermelon, and zucchini.

June is also the month of sweet apricots. Rich in carotene, apricots promote a natural, safe and quick suntan. If you buy unripe and sour apricots, dice them and season them with salt, extra virgin olive oil and minced fresh mint. A fresh and unusual summer salad you can serve as a starter.
